With plans to expand the design team, we recognised the opportunity to reset and uplift their current capabilities and ways of working. We identified a need for a more robust and scalable design system as the team was quickly outgrowing their existing one. A well-structured design system was essential for ensuring consistency, speeding up the design process with ready-to-use components, and effectively embodying the David Jones brand.

Restructuring to align with design system best practices so it is easy to use for designers and developers.

Rebuild existing components to be lean with responsive design in mind.

Fill in the gaps by creating a full library of components suitable for multiple platforms that convey and align with the David Jones brand.

The Design System consists of multiple libraries including Core, App, Web to begin, and later expanding to more niche platforms such as Amplify which is David Jones’ retail media advertising program. Each library aligns with the company's strategic pillars, and is made up of reusable components that are scalable to allow for maximum efficiency for designers and developers.

Our solutions involve:

A new file structure which consists of usage guidelines, component anatomy, best practices and templates on each page, making it easy to use and ensuring designs will be consistent across multiple designers and developers.
New components with reusability, scalability and responsiveness in mind. This ensured components were as lean as possible and easy to use both from the perspective of an end user and for a component designer.
Existing components were revisited and enhanced using the same methodology and the result was a complete library of components suitable for both web and app.

Our solution caters towards efficiency for both designers and developers as the design system acts as one source of truth. Our focus on scalability and reusability results in simplified libraries for designers and reduced code duplications for developers.

The Outcome

With the assistance of Ippon Australia, David Jones accelerated its internal team's capabilities by implementing a strong multi-channel design system that multiple areas of the business could leverage. The lean component libraries enabled David Jones’ designers and developers to collaborate and work efficiently. The new design system has been strategically built with a focus on scalability to ensure the success for future channels to be added, including the David Jones app launch and website revamp, scheduled for late October 2024.

Further results included:

Faster time to market for enhancements and future releases as it offered a collection of reusable components and patterns for designers and developers.
